Fundraising Roundup July 2017

An amazing £500 was raised for New RDA by the West Oxon Community Choir performing “Songs from the Shows” for an appreciative audience in Stonesfield, followed by afternoon teas. Thanks to Ruth Marshall who nominated us, organisers Laura and Dave, the choir and all the helpers who turned out to make the afternoon such a success.

The popular Country Fair & Open Day at Common Leys Farm Campus of Abingdon & Witney College is organised mainly by students who choose charities to raise money for and this year, led by Nell Hardy, they raised £222.38 for NYRDA. Thanks as ever to all who support us.

Summer Open Day June 2017

At our Summer Open Day 13 riders and 6 of our ponies took part in a Handy Pony competition – see Home page. Class 1 winner Michelle Rogers, who achieved the highest overall score of 90%, was awarded the Tamba Cup by RDA South Region Judge Moo Nowell-Smith. Class 2 winner was Julie Bennett on new recruit Betty in her first ever competition, and in Class 3 for junior riders Alex Rosenwasser also paired with Jasper was the winner.

Congratulations to all competitors, they showed great confidence and skill and thanks to all our volunteers for investing extra time invested in to prepare the riders, ponies and site. Through a great team effort we created a really enjoyable afternoon event for our riders and their guests.

Fundraising Roundup June 2017

Trustees Pam and Jenny were invited to Sainsbury’s Witney to receive a cheque for £4920 from their Public Relations Ambassador Lily Bancroft.

As Charity Partner 2016/17 this is the largest amount ever raised by Witney Sainsbury’s, who we thank for nominating and supporting us.

Special thanks are also due to our wonderful volunteers who turned out on 3 separate bucket shaking weekends and the generosity of customers who really value the local service we provide.

In May Chair of Trustees, Pam and Monday helper Judy set off on 4 day, 60km Sponsored Ride over a section of the Claude Duval Bridle Route from Great Barrington to Bucknell on their trusty steeds Nutmeg and Briar. They had a fabulous adventure and have raised over £1350 for the Group

Students at the Common Leys Farm Campus of Abingdon & Witney College held their Country Fair & Open Day, organised mainly by our students and opted to donate £222.38 raised to New Yatt RDA. We are currently working with YELA Equine students from A&W College and very much our relationship with them

Ragwort Patrol

Ragwort is a common weed that grows throughout the British Isles and presents a danger to horses if allowed to spread into pastures used by them. If eaten in any state, it can cause cumulative and irreversible liver damage – making it a worry for many owners.

Ragwort contains the toxic compounds pyrrolizidine alkaloids and whilst most horses won’t immediately choose to eat ragwort if it’s growing among their grazing – its taste at this stage is usually off-putting – this isn’t a guarantee and if left to grow, ragwort may spread quickly and easily. Following BHS guidelines http://www.bhs.org.uk/welfare-and-care/ragwort-toolkit-country-selection/toolkit-dealing-with-ragwort-england we aim to remove ragwort from our paddocks and need an extra team of helpers at this time of year.

Coop

In September we announced that New Yatt RDA was nominated as a local cause for the Co-op Local Community Fund.

The 6 month funding period ended on 8 April and we awarded a total of £3,940.01 and we say a huge “Thank you!” to the Witney Co-op members and customers who voted for us.

This money will be spent on horse care and help to subsidise our session fee for the next 6 months, which is vital to keep riding affordable for our riders. NYRDA is one of more than 4,000 causes across the UK who’ve benefitted from the Local Community Fund and are making a difference in their communities” #TheCoopWay.
